Great deeds of God

Joseph the son of Jacob

God shaped his character as a type of Christ. Throughout his life, in qualities of the coming Messiah: faithfulness in suffering, exaltation after humiliation, and a heart to forgive and save those who wronged him. His life is a masterclass in God’s providence.

  1. God granted his very birth. This was a miraculous act. Joseph was not just a son, but a God-given gift, establishing his unique status and setting the stage for God’s rescue plan from the very beginning.
  2. God blessed him with divine spiritual gifts. To receive and interpret dreams. They were direct revelations from God.
  3. God sovereignly preserved his life. When human hatred sought his death, God’s unseen hand redirected evil. Being sold into slavery was not a defeat, but God’s strategy to preserve Joseph and transport him to the exact location where his destiny would unfold.
  4. God’s presence caused him to prosper, also in Potiphar’s house. The Bible says “the LORD made all he did to prosper.” God’s favor was his true advantage, demonstrating that faithfulness is blessed, even in servitude.
  5. God gave him strength to resist temptation, and a powerful seduction. Joseph’s integrity was a divine enablement, despite false accusation, proved that obedience to God is paramount, and God honors purity.
  6. God remained with him in the dungeon. Prison was not abandonment. God’s presence turned the darkest place into a place of authority and favor. While God was preparing him, refining his character, and positioning him for a divine appointment.
  7. God gave him supernatural interpretation for the cupbearer’s and baker’s dreams. It was a test of Joseph’s reliance on God and a crucial, timed step to plant a seed for his future remembrance before Pharaoh.
  8. God revealed Pharaoh’s dreams and their meaning to Joseph. When all human wisdom failed, God gave Joseph the key to Egypt’s future. This was more than interpretation; it was divine statecraft, showing that true wisdom to govern nations comes from God alone.
  9. God exalted him from prisoner to viceroy. This stunning reversal is the ultimate display of God’s sovereignty. In one day, God lifted him from the pit to the palace, making him the second most powerful ruler on earth. This was not a promotion by man, but an enthronement by God for His saving purpose. Promotion cometh from the Lord.
  10. God used him as His instrument of salvation. Joseph saw the big picture: “God sent me before you to preserve life, (Genesis 45:5-7).” His rise to power had one ultimate goal: to save nations and, critically, to ensure the survival of the covenant family of Israel during the famine. God orchestrated the reconciliation. The emotional scene with his brothers was divinely engineered.
  11. God used their past evil for present good, giving Joseph a Christ-like heart to forgive and see God’s sovereign hand in all his suffering.
  12. God gave him a prophetic promise on his deathbed and he believed it: He commanded concerning his bones, which was a sure declaration that God’s promise to Abraham was more real than Egypt’s glory, and that a future exodus was certain.
